Jacob Bausch was native of Gross Sussen. Gross Sussen is situated in Germany. Bausch belonged to a family with low income. He joined apprenticeship in 1849 in the field of spectacle. He started his work at the age of 23 in Buffalo but due to epidemic of cholera he decided to go in Rochester.

Henry Lamb the companion of Bausch was native of Germany too. He joined Bausch when he was fully established. So their small organization called Bausch and Lomb.
